Toilet Paper Advertising

Source-There is nothing new about reading in the bathroom, although a couple of young men are doing their best to change the way we do it by filling the restroom walls of businesses full of toilet paper printed with advertising and coupons. The concept began with a grunt-session between 22-year-old Jordan Silverman, his cell phone and the age-old activity of a king reading on his throne. After presenting the idea to his brother, Bryan Silverman, an 18-year-old student at Duke University, the two co-founded the Star Toilet Paper Company, which is now one of five finalists in Entrepreneur magazine’s College Entrepreneur of 2012 competition.

This is either the best idea of all time or the worst idea of all time. One one hand, reading and shitting go hand in hand. People love to read stuff when they crap. It’s why bathroom graffiti is so interesting and why Home Improvement magazine is tolerable. Reading is always 30 times better on the can. On the other hand though, your product will forever be associated with shit. When I think of Apple’s iPad advertisement on some TP, I will now think that I should be wiping my ass with iPads. I always thought it was clever that my friend from NY had Red Sox toilet paper so that he was wiping his ass with his most hated team. Bottom line is that if you want people to read about your product, then you are gonna have success, but don’t complain when people start shitting on your product.
