Dive Brothers

divebros

Today I wanted to take the opportunity to promote a fellow URI student and his ever-growing clothing and design company. Though as he says in this interview, Divebros is more of a movement than just a company. I’ve been following Divebros for a while and it makes me really happy to see success where it is deserved, and to see the designs all over campus. I knew I was going to write about this a while ago, but then I thought “how much do I actually know about this?” So I decided to interview the man at the forefront: Kirby Nunez.

How did you come up with the idea for DIVE Bros?

I came up with the idea for DIVEBROS over the past summer as I thought about a clever way to promote and spark interest into what at the time was a clothing line known as KReatively RecKless that was stagnant and not going to far. DIVE brand was officially born in the summer of 2012. Divebros was just another avenue to allow me to express myself and the urban culture I’m apart of.

How long have you been working on it?

It’s been years since the idea of starting a clothing line popped Ito my head. Since I was a junior in high-school I’ve been planning and plotting my success in the fashion industry. As for how long Divebros have been working its only going to have been one year coming up on April 8th, but within this one year me and my team or divebros have already put in so much work promoting and planning events to get the name out, let alone the apparel I’ve been designing.

How hard was/is it to gain publicity for your designs?

It’s actually always been pretty easy for my designs to gain publicity. I think everyone always knew I had talents for design because I have strong background with art, and on top of that I’ve always been able to dress with ease, earning the nickname Steez the saint with style lmaooo. But in general there’s always been love for my unique designs so the public is naturally attracted to something different. An that difference just so happens to be appealing.

Are there any people who you’d say influenced your designs or who you credit for helping you in the process?

Most of my designs do come from encounters with people I talk to each day. I just talk to them and can tell what inspires or sparks their interest. From there I hit my MacBook and begin designing some Steez. There are a few designs that do deserve credit such as a recent camouflage printed hoodie that was inspired by one of the divebros members. Otherwise the whole divebros movement is a collective thing, it’s hard enough for me to design, promote, plan events, and make sales. The whole team deserves most of the credit for pushing me to take off and really give everything I have.So I’d just like to publically thank Omar,Johan,Andre,Kelvin,Yemi,Jose,Alcides,Felipe,Randy, Xavier and Emelynn for just always keeping a thugs sprits high and helping out every way possible. Lol I know that was a long ass typical niggerish shout out but I had to do it lmaooo!

Is there anything you’d like URI students to know about your clothing and designs?

URI peeps should know that we are rapidly expanding the brand. We are branching out and creating more designs for girls (divettes) and more urban upperclass style designed garments for the rhody gents. Lastly I want URI students to know that Divebrand is here to stay and to get used to seeing and hearing more about this brand whether it be through stickers everywhere, parties, or just people wearing the brand I’m not going anywhere!

If you’re interested in wearing DiveBros designs (which you should be) check out their Twitter and website. And keep your eye out for their shit on campus!
